I like my coffee and I'm a bit fussy. The supposed best coffee house in Canmore, Communetea, doesn't open before 9 AM and closes at 4 PM! ??? So its Starbucks...which is not my first choice, but it could be worse. That's my only complaint of the day. It was a good day for the Hollyburn Team today. Team Sprints. There was the Challenge category which is Juvenille/Juniors and the teams are club teams. Each team did 3 laps of 800m. Jenny/Katie had a good result with 9th place. It was Jenny's 1st Nationals and Katie is a year underage. So 6th out of 12 teams is great!
Our boys were all in the same heat. Unfortunately Quinn was still sick and Adam wasn't able to race. Adam wasn't 100% healthy either, but he put 110% effort in cheering the team on and helping out. A great team player!!
The other teams were Zayne/Sam, Nic/Seb Lucas/Fred.
Zayne had some misfortune, crashed in the exchange zone and managed to break his pole into not 3 but 4 pieces. I think that’s a world first. Nic also had a strap come undone which slowed him down a bit. Overall the guys had great races.
Lucas and Fred managed to qualify for the final with a great heads up effort by Fred to sneak into 2nd place and advance. Fred noticed that the Nakertok skier in front of him was starting to fall apart so Fred made the move, closed the gap and nipped him at the finish. They managed to finish 6th. There was some controversy as the second place team was seen making their exchange outside the transition zone. The jury deliberated whether to DSQ the Nakertok team and announced their decision to issue a warning at the coaches meeting. One of our coaches Chris Haldorson said it was the liveliest coaches meeting he has ever attended.
I enjoyed a 10 km ski with Chris and Vojta apparently you can ski all the way to Banff. The views here are spectacular. After the racing, Jake, Vojta and myself decided to go for coffee, we found what looked like a nice coffee house. Guess what, as we walked in we they announced, "We're closing in 10 minutes." It was 4:50!! So we decided to go across the street and support one of the Ski Nationals sponsors, Grizzly Paw Brew Pub. We ran into the Chris and Neil Manhard, National Team wax tech Graham Maclean. It was Chris's Birthday. Our waitress's real job was for CCC as the High Performance Coordinator.
