1st day in San Francisco

You have to get up pretty early to make a 6 AM flight. Rod Hope was picking everybody up so he was up the earliest. 3:30 am...ouch. We go to the Marina Motel in San Fran and bumped into Ben Allen, Ben is Daryl's sponsored Aussie paddler, and we proceeded to Chestnut St where we met the rest of the guys hanging out at the coffee shop getting ready to go for breakfast. After breakfast we jumped into the cars and crossed the Golden Gate Bridge to Fort Baker for a practice run, where there seemed to be an event with many vintage Bugatti cars. These old time sports cars were pretty impressive with roaring engine. The drivers were dressed in vintage clothing too. There were also some modern Bugattis which Larry G told me were worth a Million Bucks each!!

After getting on the water we paddle to Point Bonita. The wind was pretty strong but the guys who paddle yesterday said the water was much flatter. Ken Stannick, Daryl, Matt Kelly, Sean Rice, Warren Bruce and Shane Martin had all been out yesterday. Still there was some good wind chop and as you left the harbour to the Point Bonita buoy it started to ge rather big. I saw some dorsal fins of what may have been porpoise.

On the way back the waves were good and we were catching plenty of surfing runs. Sean and Ben showed their skills by rocketing off. I thought I might paddle behind Sean and maybe pick up some tips.....this lasted for about 20 seconds and he was gone.

Upon arriving back at Fort Baker we ran into the Belliingham guys who were going to paddle the downwind to Berkley. We headed back to the Motel to dry off our gear, get settled into to our suite and sip some Patron. Dinner was at a great italian restaurant on Chestnut St.
