Our Penguin Plunge Story

Well...First...We are honoured that the Mount Seymour Lions thought of asking us at Deep Cove Canoe and Kayak to organize the Penguin Plunge this year. We would like to take this opportunity to thank and acknowledge the Lions for all the years that they organized this great community New Year's Day celebration. THANK YOU ALL!!!

Ironically, the Penguin Plunge was started many years ago, 1983, by Merv Ovesen (RIP) in front of the old Deep Cove Canoe and Kayak rental shop with only four participants: Merv, Tor, Bill, Russ and also Tyler the dog. The next year, 1984, there were 16 Plungers and two dogs. And so on..and so on...

The Penguin Plunge has grown from there to the wonderful community event we enjoy today. I believe that Merv is probably having a pretty good chuckle wherever he is now that we at Deep Cove Canoe and Kayak are once again organizing the event since he was fully aware that what goes around comes around and he would take great delight in how many people come out to the Penguin Plunge now as a celebratory start to their NEW YEAR!

Please come out on New Year's Day 12:30 until 3:00 to enjoy the music and activities and plan to Plunge promptly at 2:00pm. There will be prizes for best costumes with judging at 1:30 prior to the Plunge. Draw prizes from the entries and pledges and you can also get your Penguin Plunge T-shirts!

New this year we are encouraging you all to get Pledges for Plunging with all Pledge proceeds going to support the Seymour Art Gallery. Pledge forms are available at www.deepcovekayak.com

We also encourage you to share your Penguin Plunge Stories....

Cheers and best wishes for your New Year from all of us at Deep Cove Canoe and Kayak and Deep Cove Outdoors!
